How To Find a Perfect Home Business To Work Around Your Menopause Symptoms

After I realized that my menopause symptoms were getting in the way of being in employment back in 2018 when I was 49, I knew that I had to have a rethink about my employment v home business situation.

You see, I’ve ran various home businesses over the past 25 years whilst being a work-from-home mum, and when my two boys became young men, I decided to give employment another try and I managed to land myself a long-term temporary office job at the Ministry of Justice (UK).

At first I absolutely loved it. I loved being in an office with other women. I loved the chatter and camaraderie. And of course, I loved the direct deposit into my bank account every Friday!

However, what I did not expect was my menopause symptoms to become such a huge problem.

It’s a lot easier to be at home and rest or take things easy when you have your own particular menopause symptoms (we all experience different symptoms), but boy, it was very hard when I had to meet deadlines and work in an office that had the heating on full-blast!

So if you’re wanting to start a small business from home and are experiencing menopause symptoms, then this blog post is for you.

Home Business Ideas for Women With Menopause

I’m not going to list a bunch of business ideas here, as I’ve already covered different ‘business ideas’ in a variety of posts.

Here are my business ideas posts:

I wrote this blog post to help teachers/ex or retired teachers to find a home business where they can use their teaching skills.

I then done some research to help nurses/ex or retired nurses to help them earn extra money around their nursing career or to start a home business.

If you are a housewife/home-maker then hopefully you’ll find this list of home business ideas informative.

Wow, I didn’t realize I had written so many blog posts specifically on business ideas alone!

Steps To Choose Your Perfect Business Idea

When you’ve had a quick peek at those pages and business ideas, then follow these steps to help you find your home business idea.

1) What Are Your Menopause Symptoms?

Write down exactly what your menopause symptoms are and when they occur the most.

You probably have two or three main symptoms, so write them down and identify which ones stop you from doing things the most.

If you can, pinpoint when / what time of day any of these symptoms tend to occur.

I know this is extremely difficult, and that you can’t look into a crystal ball and see when you’re going to have your next hot flush or if you’re going to have a ‘felling low day’ next Tuesday! But if you do see a time pattern of a particular symptom, then write that down.

2) Business Ideas Probably Best to Avoid

Now, only you know you and what your body and mind are currently going through, but in my menopausal experience, I needed to avoid certain business models.

For example, you might want to think twice about doing client work each day and having to meet tight daily deadlines.

Do you think your menopause symptoms would get in they way of meeting tight deadlines?

They did for me, and so client work was not an option I pursued.

Client work is where you run a service-based business, and so there will inevitably be some type of deadline to stick to. But obviously depending on the client, some deadlines won’t be as tight and stringent as others.

Examples of running a client service-based business:

The first two services tend to be quite demanding, and your business wouldn’t likely last long if you kept missing deadlines.

The same applies to the latter two offline services, if you kept letting your dog walking or house cleaning customers down, then they will soon find someone to replace you.

3) Business Ideas To Work Around Your Menopause Symptoms

The best business ideas are those which you’re not 100% committed to on a daily basis and therefore, ones which you can work around your menopause symptoms as and when they occur.

Examples of non-service based businesses:

  • Blogging
  • Running an ecommerce store
  • Creating and selling jewelry
  • Gift basket business
  • Creating & selling digital products
  • Creating and writing books for Amazon Kindle

Here you’re not relying on carrying out work for clients in exchange for money.

Instead you either run a business and earn passive income:

  • Blogging
  • Selling digital products, and
  • Selling Kindle books on Amazon

or you wait for products to be sold so you can ship them to customers:

  • eCommerce store
  • Selling gift baskets

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule and even though becoming a freelance proofreader is service-based, I feel that this type of business would be fun and relatively stress-free to do sitting on your sofa.

The same applies to sewing alterations or bookkeeping. You’re still offering a service, but I think the completion and delivery of these services can be just that little bit more lenient than some other more demanding services.

Summary

Understand and pin down exactly what your menopause symptoms are and how they affect you on a day-to-day basis.

Then look through all of the home business ideas and decide which one will suit you the best, and be gently towards your menopause symptoms.
